Future Ready Schools and AppsEvents Google for School Leaders! (Session 1 of 2)
  • What does it mean to be a Google school?

    • We start from the basics and take a high level look at what it means to be a Google school

    • We explain how Google Apps for Education works, what Apps are included in the ‘core suite’ and what other ‘non core’ Google Apps you can use

    • We cover a lot of basic stuff to be sure all attendees are starting from the same level such as: Do you need a Google Server? Can you use Google in your school if you are running on a MS base? Do all students need an account on your domain? Can one teacher run Google Classroom if we are not a Google School? etc. etc.

  • How can Google help me and our leadership team in our jobs?

    • This is where we get into Forms, shared Docs, research, etc. We focus in on the best practices for using Google Drive and Docs specifically for school management with specific examples of using forms, spreadsheets and more

    • We also look at using Google tools for:

      • Leadership teams

      • Accreditation (for example by CIS WASC and NEASC which is something schools go through every 5 and 10 years and with Google Apps this process has become much more efficient and effective)

      • Work flows, meeting minutes

      • Structure and Google Drive folder expectations and protocols

First Coding with Tynker, Raspberry Pi and Code Week!
First there were smartphones, and then there were mobile apps.  Since the advent of mobile devices - phones and tablets - apps have become synonymous with mobile computing.

This session takes teachers through their very first steps into block based coding - visual blocks representing complex strings.

Starting with Tynker, you will learn how to manage a class of learners with this fun programming environment.

There will be a limited number of Samsung tablets available for participants to this session.

Additionally, Ross Lace, an ESL instructor and Google Apps Admin, will talk about Raspberry Pi - a barebones computer designed to get students into all things coding.

The week of 6-10 December is Code Week - a great initiative to get students and teacher involved in basic coding challenges.

Providing Feedback via screencasting
My session would be conducted in a workshop style where I would explain my current practice of using Screencastify, Youtube, and Google docs to provide feedback and resources to students in an accessible, time efficient manner. Uploading such information onto these online platforms provides helpful analytics which allow teachers to evaluate whether: A) the feedback was viewed or followed and by how many students, and B) when/what time of day, proximity to test date etc feedback/resources were viewed. This allows teachers to modify their practice based on their evaluations of how useful a given resource was to students and in some cases, determine whether individual students' success corresponds to their use or lack of use of available online resources/personalized feedback.

Collaborative Discussion and NewsELA
Getting students to "step up" and discuss issues can be a struggle. Also, creating differentiated resources can be a challenge as well.

This session will take participants through the intersection of pedagogical models such as differentiated resources and instruction, and tech integration with Chrome Apps. The first part will allow participants to explore "NewsELA" and how to set up class lists and track student progress on current events. The second part will take participants through "Collaborative Discussion" as a means for group synthesis and consensus involving microblogging and active questioning.

No matter what you teach, these activities can be molded into many different grade level applications and subjects.
